The book and this FAQ mentioned company archives available at the New York Public Library. Would anyone know of any archive resources in the Philadelphia area? I couldn't find any reference in the main Philadelphia library.

Thanks.

What animal did the coffee dispensers resemble at Horn and Hardarts Automats?
Marianne
Posted on Wednesday, July 06, 2005 - 7:55 pm:

They were dolphin heads, based on a fountain Joe Horn saw on a trip to Italy.

Thanks for the information about the coffee dispensers. I have read they were a duck and an eagle and in my minds eye a little clouded with nostalgia they were a lion. But I always volunterd to get my Mom's coffee just to watch that hot dark liquid squirt from the dispenser.

What would the big deal be to give us the recipes, the baby boomers that are left are in there late 50,60 after we are gone will anybody even care of know what a Horn and Hardarts is. Just give a chance to cook some good old fashion memories. We are the ones that made them there fortune. Would I love to try and make there silhouette cake or any item that I ate when I was a kid.

My grandfather had Sheppard's Market on Market Street in Philadelphia. Sheppard's Market was known for its coffee. My grandfather, George Sheppard, was a good friend of Mr. Horn, especially. He sold to Horn & Hardarts' and I think the market closed but the coffee business continued... almost solely to supply the automats. Do you think this is correct? Do you know anything more about the famous Horn & Hardart coffee?

Did H & H have a location at 54th and City Line Ave in Phila?
Janet Poore
Posted on Monday, April 16, 2007 - 1:03 pm:

Yes. H&H had a location at 54th & City Line. I grew up in Wynnefield and my family, my friends and I practically lived there during the 50's and 60's. The H&H was on the corner directly across from SunRay drugs and catty corner to Dake's Drugstore. There was also another one in Bala Cynwyd shopping center where the Olive Garden is now.

For those looking for H&H vanilla sauce (and more) recipe, There is a website called Hungrybrowser dot com. If you do a search for Phaedrus Lost Recipes, you will find it.

My neighborhood H&H was located on Frankford Ave. under the "El" at Margaret Street stop. Diagonal from the restaurant/automat (across the street) was the bakery. Does anyone remember the Frankford Ave. location?

Are H&H foods or coffee available in any stores?

In recent years I would see such foods as Baked Beans, Mac and Cheese and coffee, BUT I CANNOT FIND ANYTHING NOW/

Is anything being made and sold from H&H?

I am in the Philadelphia, PA area.

To Frankie D. I remember the H&H. It was a special treat to go there. We grew up in the Frankford section of Philly (Church St) and although I was little, Loved to go there. Can you help me out? A recollection of an upstairs and downstairs section at that H&H and also a dumb-waiter they used between the floors? Do you remember this too?

Can anyone (Marianne?) supply me with the street number of the H&H Retail Store that was located on the 5700 block of Broad Street (or Old York Road) in Philadelphia. I'm trying to create a map of the "old neighborhood" surrounding Broad & Olney.

I was known as Baby Rosalie and sang every Sunday morning on the H & H Show from 1932-1935.I was 3 yrs old til 6 yrs of age. I had to stand on a box to reach the Microphone. I went back at the age of 13 for a comeback, but the time ran out and i was not able to go on. Does anyone remember me? I sang "On the good ship Lollypop" and other Shirley Temple songs. Kitty Kallen was on at the same time and Stanley Brosa's son Eliot Lawrence directed the orchestra.
