Please help end a company dispute. Do any Automat resturants still exist? Some co-workers claim there is still one in existance in New York, but nobody seems to know the location. I would love to eat in an Automat Resturant again.

Unfortunately there are no automats left. The Horn & Hardart company is completely dissolved. Occasionally people talk about bringing automats back but I honestly can't imagine recreating the place you remember.

Hi, I was surfing the net and there's still automats of sort in Holland. They serve local delicacies such as risoles, frikandel, loempias, etc. BTW, I see the possiblity that Flushing Meadow Park may have an automat. Is that true? Also, please tell me more about the vendor who's selling one of those machines. Thank you.

Hi Hungry Traveler-

Yes, I have heard of the automats in Holland but I haven't been there to try them out. There is a Janpanese company that is also looking to bring them back over there.

The person to speak to about Flushing Meadow Park and buying machines is Steve Stollman. You can look at his site (if you haven't already come across it) at www.theautomat.com.
Thanks for writing in.

Hi All,

I was wondering, is there still a company that makes and sells the automat hardware in the United States?

I didn't see a reply to when the last Automat closed. Could you let me know, please. As do so many people, I have only fond memories of "eating at the Automat."

I grew up in Flushing because my grandmother worked for the automats
in Manhattan but then transferred to
Flushing to work in the restaurant
there -- about 1959 or so. My mom
also worked for H&H for years. H&H
was a big part of life for us! When the flushing
store closed we wound up with a few interesting things. We still have the
big yellow water glasses.

THE LAST AUTOMAT I WENT TO WAS AT 42nd.ST. AND THIRD AVE. I WANTED TO TAKE MY CHILDREN TO SEE IT. THIS WAS AROUND 1986. HORN & HARDART WERE TAKE OUT STORES WITH THE BEST PIES EVER MADE. I HAD MANY MEALS AT THE 14th ST. AUTOMAT. (NYC) WHAT WAS MORE FACINATING THAN COFFEE FROM THE LIONS HEAD? WE ALSO HAD THAT HIGH CLASS PLACE RATNER'S ON DELANCEY ST AND ONE ON SECOND AVE

I heard this morning on radio that an automat was opening tomorrow in NYC. I didn't get any more info. Can anyone add to this?

Wendy: Bamn opened in the East Village. Saint Marks Place and Second Ave. I never had the pleasure of visiting H&H in its heyday, but from everything I've read, Bamn Automat does not stack up.

BAMN! is very different from the old Automats, it looks like its geared toward smaller meals and quick service. I guess in these times that is what works and nostalgia doesn't pay the bills? I like the peanut butter and jelly and mac n cheese kroket.

There is a chain of automats in the Netherlands called Febo, their meals are geared towards fast food however: burgers and croquettes.

Up until the late 90's i was able to purchase desserts, such as Rice @ Tapioca pudding in Pathmark supermarket, Nanuet, N.Y. Is any one still distributing your products? Plase say yes.

I am in my 20s and of course I am to young to have been to an automat, but I have watched a Doris Day movie my whole life in which she goes to an automat. It looks like so much fun, I wish I could have the opportunity to eat in one!!
